About Me:

I have had more recesses than any kid could count. I taught school for 23 years and loved recess. I didn’t stand around and watch the kids play. I played with them.

And I played with them in the classroom, too. When we studied Egypt, we turned our room into a tomb. When we studied dinosaurs, I buried deer and cow and coyote bones and we dug them up and made believe that they were dino bones.
And we played with stories too.

My students would say, “Tell me a story, Miss McKy! Pleeeezzz!”

So, I made up many stories for my students.

And although I no longer have students, I still make up stories for kids. Some days, that’s easy to do. Some other days, I take the dogs across the street for five walks, because I’m stuck on a story and I’d rather walk the dogs five times than stare at my computer.

I also write for magazines, which is fun. I get to go out and meet interesting people, like people who design airplanes and run companies and race bikes in the Olympics.

And I try to do interesting things, too. I paddled down the Mississippi river…twice! I’ve camped in caves and walked hundreds of miles in the mountains. I even spent four weeks on a wild island when I was 15…and then rode my bike nearly a thousand miles to get home.

I think adventures help me write. And I think playing with kids all those years helps me write too.

My students used to say, “You’re a big kid, Miss McKy.”

And I would say, “Shhh! Don’t let the adults know.”
